Haute Tension (US title, "High Tension") is director Alexandre Aja's third film [Over the Rainbow, 1997; Furia, 1999...yeah, I had to look those up too!]. In his ode to the horror/gore genre, he in no way limited himself. The two main characters, college friends Marie and Alexia, travel to the idyllic French countryside to get some serious studying in. Instead of doing that, they become the targets of a psychotic trucker capable of amazing feats of skill. My fave-move was the stairway deacpitation, which opened the bloodshed. As it turns out, Marie, the boy-cut blonde, has the hots for Alexia, but of course it's all unrequieted, leading the viewer to suspect her actions from the very beginning. Add to that Marie's early recount of a dream she had during the opening credits in which she, badly injured and bleeding profusely, was being chased through the woods by a killer, who turned out to be herself, and we have a fairly predictable outcome. Whether or not Aja was attempting to be complex with his plot, he get's extra points in Tension for clever cinemagraphic story-telling that made the film a whole lot of fun to watch. Besides, who doesn't like French lesbians? Any Wes Craven fans out there will be happy to hear that he's pegged Aja to be the "future of horror," and has picked him to re-make his 1977, The Hills Have Eyes.

An Oasis in a Sea of...

I just thought I'd share a clipping from the Daily Texan, UT's newspaper. That orange dot, by the by is where Austin lies. The clipping reads:

“The majority of voters in every county in the state except Travis County voted for Proposition 2:‘The constitutional amendment providing that marriage in this state consists only of one man and one woman and prohibiting this state or a political subdivision of this state from creating or recognizing any legal status identical or similar to marriage.’”

Living in Austin isn't exaclty the same thing as living in Texas, this definitely confirms it for me.

Disclaimer: I'm currently anti-marriage, but it would've been nice to be recognized as a human- being by the state of Texas for a day or two.

Is it god’s will or constitutional gay-bashing? On Tuesday, November 8th, I learned that the state of Texas, at least the vast majority of it, is keenly interested in establishing a de facto separate-and-unequal status quo when it comes to marriage. Although gay marriage is already considered illegal in the state of Texas, some legislators apparently thought it incumbent on them to politicize the issue through this controversial amendment intermingling gay rights, religious ideology, and simmering hatred all for the public to ratify via the vote.

Great job Texas, anybody in a blue state looking to hire and house a gay rights refugee?

What Country is This, Anyway?

Today’s Democracy Now! had an interesting and disturbing report on the indiscriminant use of white phosphorous during the U.S. attack on Fallujah one year ago today. Amy Goodman had on three guests for the segment that included a former American soldier now speaking out against the war, a representative for the Pentagon in Iraq and the news director for the Italian TV network (RAI) that produced “Fallujah: The Hidden Massacre.” The Independent reports more on the criticism the U.S. is receiving from a leading campaign group concerned about this country's wanton use of weapons that are not considered chemical, but should be.

In other news, Proposition 2, a Texas constitutional amendment that bans gay marriage, passed with a stunning 76% approval, with over a third of the precincts reporting at the time of this update. It's a super-sad day in the state of Texas.

The Lost Podcast

So Amanda and I arranged to get together one night last week to work on our first local-audio podcast. Local-audio essentially means that all participants in the show/interview record their audio locally and then send in their isolated recording through to the editor that runs all the audio together.

Sounds easy, right?

Well, I thought so too until about halfway through the show when Amanda was answering questions before I even asked them and hilarious laughter during dead pauses. It sounded a little schizo, so we shelved it. Oh well.

I'm still convinced I can make that type of show work, I just have to do more experimenting. But in the meantime, I've got a new podcast up with just me! Yay?

Processing...Standby

Hey everyone.

This weekend gave me a lot of new perspective to what's being called by some a pro-peace movement, by others a disgraceful show of "un-Americanism"...whatever the hell that means.

I'm still working to process all of it into a digestable form and writing about it or speaking with my co-workers about the weekend has helped.

People I've talked to in my department here at UT Austin were understandably surprised by the incongruencies between my recollections of events at Crawford and what they heard or saw through popular media sources.

Of course before last weekend I had an intellectual understanding that the media distorts reality to suit its own ends, but only now do I have the experiential factor reinforcing my distaste for popular news sources.

Anyway, I've got to get back to work but a note about the picture above. No matter what the media says, you can take it from me that this was the only ProBush signage I saw for an entire day in Crwaford, and they didn't even stop.

I just wanted to chime in from my lovely mobile AustinExhaustion headquarters here in Waco, TX, where I've just gotten back from a day out at Camp Casey! I spent the first two hours talking to people who were coming out to show their support and just getting acclimated to the extreme heat.

Then Fausto, Madge and Patricia Fernos showed up and they got down to business with podcasting. It was definitely a learning experience to work along side of them in getting interviews and I even got to be camera-op on some stuff Madge did for Insane Films, and that's just day one. I really look forward to returning tomorrow and getting more interviews as I work on my technique! It's been really good practice.

I'm still processing a lot of what I experienced out there at Camp Casey but it was empowering to be out there with so many like-minded people.

A voice is beginning to rise up where there was only silence before. Amongst so many other things I learned today, I came to understand that what's happening in Crawford is bigger than Cindy Sheehan, bigger than any one person; it's taking on a life of its own right in front of us.

Waco Update!

I made it into Waco at about 11pm last night and surprised one of my good friends who recently moved into her very own abode out here in Central Texas. But before I pulled into her complex I got a little turned around thanks to some vague directions given to me by Google Maps and I had to stop in at a local gas station to get directions and it went a little something like this:

Brandon: Do you know where Van American Way is?

Clerk: [blank stares at me for an uncomfortable length of time] No.

Brandon: Ok, thanks.

Clerk: [With the utmost indifference, drawls] You can use these phonebooks though.

Brandon: Great. [Goes to a stack of phone books on the other counter and pretends to thumb through the pages for about a minute, realizes it's not helping and slinks out while the clerk wasn't looking.]
